Critical Parent Ego State

Other Ego States

This ego state has been clearly presented in Gestalt and Transactional Analysis. This persona seeks to be powerful in an attempt to keep the child ego states in line. The Critical Parent scolds the Feeling Child for being weak and selfish and the Playful Child for being stupid and outrageous. The Critical Parent is very busy judging each word, action and intention against a standard that is established in early childhood as a form of control against a chaotic world. Early socialization takes form in this ego state and turns life into a performance of rules that keep the person safe from external criticism but bound by the internal critic. Most people live their lives between Feeling Child and that Critical Parent ego states. Whenever the child has a feeling the critical Parent is hovering with warnings and discouragement. This is the ego state that invented shame. Yet, when the Critical Parent is tamed it can rejoin the group as Discernment.
